A Lesson from West Virginia
West Virginia teachers have shown that despite the failure of politicians to protect the rights of working people to organize, working people standing together are unstoppable. Striking teachers have shown that no court case or legislation can stop the power of solidarity and the willingness to stand up for justice.
West Virginia is among the handful of “right to work-for less” states, a fate that may soon be shared by California after the Supreme Court rules on Janus v AFSCME.

City of Hayward Members Fight for—and Win—a New Contract
After several months of contract negotiations and high-visibility actions, Hayward workers have approved a new contract. The three-year agreement includes raises, in addition to other gains that would help workers continue to live and work in Hayward.

Membership Matters
Why Membership Matters
Workers stand together in SEIU 1021 to fight for better wages, job security, healthcare, retirement security, paid sick days, vacation and other benefits. United in our union, we’ve not only won strong contracts and enforced them but also amplified the voices of working people in our economy and society. So-called “right to work,” funded by the corporate elites and the wealthy 1%, seeks to take away our ability to join together to negotiate a fair return on our work.
What’s the Process to Form a Union?
SEIU Local 1021 represents public sector workers and private nonprofit workers.
If your employer has a collective bargaining agreement with SEIU 1021, becoming a union member is easy. You can call our Member Resource Center at 1-877-687-1021 to become a member.
If you and your coworkers are without a union at your workplace and would like to form one, contact us to get started. SEIU Local 1021 organizers will walk you through the process of forming a union if your workplace is eligible.
Take the Norma Rae Challenge
Having a union means having a voice and being treated with respect. It means having financial security and a chance at a middle class life. It means providing a home for our families, food on our tables and clothes for our children.
That’s why we’re asking all union members and their families to show that regardless of the Janus ruling, we’re sticking together. Our fight for economic and social justice will not be deterred.
Workers Demand Union City Council Invest in City Workers
Public Works, Parks and Recreation department workers and their families sent a clear message to Union City Council on July 25, invest in our community, and invest in city workers. With the cost of living too high for many workers and families, and City revenue strong, Union City Council has a responsibility to invest in its workers. “Members want to put a face to the budget process so that Union City leaders are held accountable at the bargaining table,” said William Bontadelli, from Public Works/Ground.
