Martin Sheen, 1,200 Graduating Seniors, and Guests Support Santa Clara Univ. Adjuncts and Lecturers’ Efforts to Unionize
On June 16, at Santa Clara University’s commencement ceremony, adjuncts and lecturers’ campaign for a free and fair election on unionization got a big shout out during the keynote speech by actor Martin Sheen. As a labor, environmental, and anti-war activist, as well as a life-long union member, he was willing to treat his commencement speech as an opportunity to urge the SCU administration to grant adjuncts and lecturers a fair and free vote to unionize.
Mendocino County Workers Take To The Streets to Meet with Small Business Owners and Residents
As part of their Raise Up Mendocino County contract campaign, Mendocino County workers are talking to local small business owners and residents about the need for the county to invest in public services and the dedicated workforce that provides these services.
Standing with Gig Workers in the Fight Against Uber and Lyft
Uber and Lyft are trying to pressure drivers into opposing Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5), a piece of legislation that would expand rights and protections for drivers in California. Starting last Friday, the billion-dollar companies launched emails to try to trick drivers to sign a misleading petition so they don’t have to treat drivers fairly.

Stand Up to the Mayor's Bullying at City Hall, Tuesday, June 18, at 5 p.m.
The City is trying to scare our members by threatening layoffs and falsely claiming bargaining is at impasse: We need to show we will NOT be intimidated.
City Administration took two outrageous actions this week, emailing our members and threatening them with layoffs for supporting City Council President Rebecca Kaplan’s budget and then claiming contract negotiations are at an impasse.

City of Oakland Workers Lead the Community’s Fight for a City Budget That Works for Everyone
City of Oakland workers led the community charge last night as
hundreds of Oaklanders stormed Oakland’s City Council meeting to
speak out in favor of good services for city residents.
Previously, Mayor Libby Schaaf had proposed a budget that the
community had roundly rejected for making parks dirtier and less
safe by cutting Parks and Rec staffing, ignoring homelessness and
the affordable housing crisis, and making city workers poorer
while costs of living continue to skyrocket.
Contra Costa County Takes Action to Combat Chronic Understaffing
Contra Costa County shop stewards Katrina Beverly,
Vickey Dominguez, and Ashley Payne met with their coworkers
regarding worksite issues. To discover that all were
impacted by chronic understaffing. Chief Steward Ashley
Payne sent a request for information and found that hundreds of
positions were unfilled by the county.
Members leaped into action to organize their coworkers to attend
three Board of Supervisors meetings to tell their stories about
how understaffing lowers worker morale and
hurts the services they provide to the community.
