SOLANO COUNTY WORKERS FIGHT TO PROTECT THE SICK AND THE TEMPORARILY DISABLED AMONG THEM

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

(Fairfield, CA)--County workers will pack the Board of Supervisor’s chamber to outline why they will consider taking a strike vote in the coming weeks.  County workers believe negotiations continue to drag and nearing impasse.

The contract dispute is not over cost of living increases but over two major contract takeaways. The first is a disability insurance takeaway that will hurt the sick and temporarily disabled county worker.  The second is a flexible work schedule takeaway that will limit or stall services to the public.

“Many of us have worked many years and have committed our lives to helping the sick and the disabled in this community. Today we are fighting for a simple guarantee that if we fall sick and temporarily disabled we won’t lose our job or health care benefits,” said Solano County Clinical Psychologist Dr. Richard Lundeen.

Many county workers do work from 8AM-5PM, but there are workers that need to provide services past 5PM.
“If the county does away with flexible schedules, one of two things will result.  Either a lot of needy people will get services until the next day, or the county will be wasting a lot of money paying over time,” said Dr. Lundeen.
