Redding City Workers Strive to Maintain Services

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

On Wednesday, Sept. 16, City of Redding workers represented by the Service Employees International Union Local 1021 voted to defer negotiated salary increases in order to preserve direct services to Redding taxpayers.

“I’m proud of my colleagues, who took the high road by voting to waive salary increases in service to the community” said Michael Lawrence, a Senior Water Treatment Operator. “We’re proving once again that we are truly public servants.”

Redding workers voted to defer negotiated salary increases and to extend the current contract with the City of Redding until June 30, 2014. Additionally, quality of life options are now being offered, such as voluntary time off and Union leaders will be asking the city to discuss early retirement and other cost-saving measures.

“We hope the Redding City Council takes notice of our leadership with this action and we hope the City will continue to work with us to preserve public services and cut costs,” said Lawrence
