Who: Human Service Employees . Human Service Advocates . Board of
Supervisors--John Avalos, Chris Daly, Ross Mirkarimi . Deborah Walker
-- Women's Political Committee . Harvey Milk Club
Why: Human Services workers and advocates from across the city will
speak out about current trends within San Francisco to cut city
services to those who need them most and a failure to value the
providers of the care.
In June, Human Service Agency workers across the city gave back $38
million in concessions to save jobs and services. The Mayor's end of
the bargain was to come up with alternatives to layoff notices. The
Mayor's proposed cuts to vital service agencies across the city
indicate he has decided to balance the budget on his terms versus his
promises.
San Francisco Human Services Agency that serves almost 100,000
residents a year is facing far-reaching cuts that threaten its own
mission to "promote well-being and self-sufficiency among individuals,
families and communities."
In addition to undermining quality care, these cuts violate Proposition
H, approved by voters in 1986 that requires the city to ensure that
municipal jobs dominated primarily by women provide wages on par with
male-dominated jobs that have similar qualifications.
This agency provides services to seniors and adults with disabilities,
families and children, housing and homeless services, food assistance,
employment and job training and more.
