Feb. 11-12, 2012: Announcing the first SEIU 1021 Member Convention
People cause problems; people can fix them. The present economic crisis was caused by a handful of people acting in narrow and greedy self-interest; people can turn our fortunes around, but to do so, we'll need to act in the interests of everyone, not just of banks and corporations who pay their CEOs and lobbyists more than they pay in income tax (see The Live Wire below).
Throughout history, the labor movement has responded to major crises by joining other social justice movements to organize and create massive change for the betterment of people's lives. Today, the need for concerted action could not be more clear.
Our jobs, wages, benefits and the services we provide are threatened absolutely everywhere we work. We live under constant and growing economic pressures both as individuals and as a union. Everywhere we are forced to make concessions at the table.
SEIU 1021 members are already fighting back, launching public campaigns to save our jobs and the services we provide to that public. Together we've already saved hundreds of jobs and restored tens of millions of dollars to city and county budgets.
SEIU 1021 Member Convention: "Championing Our Jobs and the People We Serve"
In February our local will hold its first-ever member convention to chart our course for the future. Every single chapter will elect and send two (2) voting delegates to the convention, but any member may attend. The delegate election process is beginning now.
We have an opportunity to demonstrate how our union can be the vehicle that champions our jobs and the people we serve, be a force for good in the world and our communities
... by putting pressure on our bosses to change their misguided priorities
... by electing and lobbying our state and local lawmakers
... by fighting for a fair and equitable economy.
The SEIU 1021 Member Convention is where we will set our course for the future. We're already on the move.
