An Imposing Task: SEIU 1021 fights back against epidemic of contract impositions

The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors approved an 18-month contract with SEIU 1021 members this week, following a supermajority ratification vote among members the week before.

The votes happened only after long and contentious negotiations. Our bargaining team made significant movement at the table, but county negotiators stalled and instead marched towards imposition -- an anti-union tactic that SEIU1021 members have been confronting with increasing frequency all over the local.

"The county clearly had a goal of imposition in mind. We were able to avoid that fate, but it was a close call," said Patrick Ikeda, president of the San Joaquin County chapter.

Contract impositions have hit SEIU 1021 members like a plague epidemic. Our members bargained more than 100 contracts in 2011 -- more than half the local -- everywhere facing this strategic effort to attack collective bargaining and take back any gains that we and other unions have made throughout the years.

In a Supermajority Vote, SEIU 1021 Members Ratify a Tentative Agreement with San Joaquin County.

On Thursday,  89% voted YES on the TA. That means we want the 18-month contract. Next up: The Board of Supervisors will vote to ratify on Dec. 6.

Time to Vote on Your Contract!

The Bargain Team wants you to know this Tentative Agreement is a better alternative to the County’s “last, best and final offer.”
A NO vote means the County  can and will impose harsher terms (like more furlough days).
A YES vote on Dec. 1 allows us to avoid that fate. If you abstain from voting, it is like voting “no” and increases the chances of imposition.
Please support the ratification of this Tentative Agreement!

SEIU 1021 members turn up the heat in San Joaquin

In San Joaquin, summer is when it's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. But that's nothing compared to the heat that SEIU 1021 members are cranking up in this Central Valley county.

County workers have launched a public campaign — "Keeping Our Dream Alive" — to rally support for public services and opposition to wasteful spending proposed by the Board of Supervisors. At the same time, Head Start workers are fighting against restructuring that means taking funding from frontline positions and giving it to unnecessary upgrades and administrative costs.
