It Takes "Two to Tango" in Mendocino County

On Tuesday, October 4, Mendocino County workers told the Board of Supervisors it "takes two to tango" and that contract bargaining is stalled because county management refuses to send a negotiator to the table with any authority to reach an agreement.

The workers presented supervisors with 740 dance cards — one for each worker in the bargaining unit — and invited them to join SEIU 1021 for the "Work Together Waltz," "Settlement Salsa," "Labor Peace Polka" and other dances be sending someone with decision-making authority to the next bargaining session on Oct. 11.

Mendocino County Update

To: SEIU Members

UPDATE:

On Friday, after some verbal wrangling Rick Haeg, the County’s Chief Negotiator, admitted he takes direction from the Board and does not have authorization to move off of the 12.5% proposal saying that he had no wiggle room to negotiate over that position.

The Friday meeting mirrored the table time we used to “not-discuss” the County’s 36hr work week proposal when Rick approached our August 24, 2011session as a no negotiating, no bargaining, no movement possible session because his only direction at that time was to “don’t change a thing.”

Mendocino Walks Out

Trickle-Down Poverty: Mendocino workers walk off job to protest ultimatum & bad faith bargaining

SEIU 1021’s entire Mendocino County bargaining unit — more than 700 county workers — walked off the job Monday afternoon to protest and call the public’s attention to bad faith bargaining and retaliatory actions by the Board of Supervisors. As the supervisors’ forced deadline for a deal passed on Monday, we filed new Unfair Labor Practice charges with the NLRB.

It was the first time in county history that SEIU workers have walked out in protest. Hundreds of workers lined the streets in downtown Ukiah, Willits and Fort Bragg, waving signs and chanting as they circulated around major intersections while cars honked loud and long in support. On Tuesday morning, members carried their protest into the 9am Board of Supervisors meeting.
