ALAMEDA COUNTY COPE COMMITTEE OFFICERS & STAFF:

The Alameda County COPE Committee meets monthly on the first Tuesday at the SEIU Local 1021 office at 100 Oak Street, Oakland 94607. Dinner at 5:30; meeting at 6:00 PM. The meetings are open to all members of SEIU Local 1021. Voting delegates to the COPE committee must be approved/appointed by their chapters.

SEIU LOCAL 1021 COPE COMMITTEE

The COPE Committee of SEIU Local 1021 meets monthly on the second Tuesday at various locations. The meeting can be accessed by videoconference and by teleconference (phone). The meeting is chaired by the Local 1021 Political Action Chair, Alysabeth Alexander. The three officers of the Alameda County COPE committee are the voting members at this higher-level committee, representing Alameda County. ALAMEDA COUNTY CENTRAL LABOR COUNCIL (ALC)

SEIU Local 1021 is affiliated with the Central Labor Council of Alameda County. Delegates are appointed to the CLC by the Alameda County COPE committee. The Executive Committee of the ALC meets 9:00 AM on the first Friday of the month. The Delegates meeting is at 7:00 PM of the first Monday following the first Friday of the month. Local 1021 member and First Vice President Gary Jimenez is the Second Vice President of the ALC, www.alamedalabor.org.

Election Message from SEIU 1021 President Roxanne Sanchez

The 2012 elections present us with many challenges. Public employees are being scapegoated for our economic woes, while the Wall Street crashers have been getting away with grand theft.

Our retirement is the target of dishonest and misguided “pension reform” proposals. The Right is trying to silence our voice with their “Corporate Deception” measure. Contract negotiations across the local are dominated by wage concession demands and more and more expensive health care. Our communities continue to face dwindling services, school cuts and foreclosures.

It doesn’t have to be this way. We have a chance this year to begin to turn it around, to elect officials who will stand with the 99% for a change.

Overcrowded classrooms, laid-off teachers, overstretched police and public safety services. After four years of deep cuts, the Golden State has lost its shine. The all-cuts approach hasn't worked, and regular, working people and their families (your families!) are paying the price. We can't afford more cuts to our vital services. It's time to invest in California's comeback.

The Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012 is the only initiative that takes care of the whole state. By replenishing the state's General Fund, it funds schools, cities and counties. It raises up to $9 billion a year for education, health and dental care, child care, police, fire, parks, transportation and programs for seniors, disabled and the poor.

SEIU 1021-supported measures and candidates fare well in Nov. 8 elections

In a very tight election for the Fairfield City Council, the candidate endorsed by SEIU 1021 — Pam Bertani — not only beat incumbent Chuck Timm by 125 votes but unseated appointed council member Rick Vacarro. As the polls opened on election day, Bertani actually trailed Timm in absentee votes, but by mid-morning our get-out-the-vote efforts helped give her the lead, which she kept throughout the day.

Bertani’s election was just the start. Most of the candidates and ballot measures supported by SEIU 1021 prevailed on Tuesday.

SEIU 1021 launches local-wide “Fight for a Fair Economy” campaign

For years, the city of Stockton has had one of the highest foreclosure and unemployment rates in the nation. In June 2011 alone, one in 210 housing units received a foreclosure filing. With unemployment expected to stay flat in most of the nation this year, in Stockton it’s expected to rise from 17.2 to 18.1 percent. Six months ago, California took eight of the top 20 spots on Forbes’ annual America’s Most Miserable Cities list, “with Stockton ranking first for the second time in three years.”

If anything, last week’s debt ceiling deal has only made matters worse for Stockton and all of California. In an odd way, the bad deal has actually united the nation: Both Wall Street and Main Street agree it sucks. Congress and the White House let everyone down for (fill in your petty, partisan, ideological and/or pathological reason of choice).

As usual, SEIU 1021 members aren’t taking things lying down. Let the “fight for a fair economy” begin ...

There is a deceptive ballot measure in paid circulation right now that would effectively eliminate the voice of working people in the halls of government.

Its backers? Billionaires and corporations who want to silence the voices of librarians, nurses, bus drivers, social workers, and other people like us. This initiative isn't about "getting special interests out of politics." It's about gaming the system so that CEOs, Wall Street bankers, tobacco companies, oil companies, and drug companies can control our state without any opposition.
