Training for Chapter Web Stewards

How to get your chapter home page on the 1021 website -- with your stewards, contracts, and worksite meetings and events.

Calendar Policy: Chapter meetings and events

I'm skipping the discussion group posting for the moment because there's another topic I need to cover first: calendar events.

How do we get our chapter/worksite meetings and events on the Web calendar?

Because there are so many chapters in 1021 -- way, way more than in some of the legacy locals -- we simply cannot post every chapter meeting and event on the main calendar. It would become so congested with monthly meetings, meetings at different work sites, rallies, picnics, and everything else that happens in your chapters, that it would become unreadable.

To solve this problem, calendar events and meetings are posted in two ways:

Getting the big picture

Is there some kind of big picture here? What’s the point of all this?

Yes, indeed there is. A big picture. And a point. Over the past year (almost) we’ve been noticing how members use or want to use the 1021 Web site for their chapter business, industry-based organizing, and, especially, contract campaigns. Who’s wanted a blog for bargaining updates? Who’s posted photos of their rallies to build spirit? Who wanted members to download flyers?

Putting it all together, what we’ve come up with is a new Chapters Online section that collects all chapter pages, campaign blogs, photo galleries, and 1021-wide bargaining updates (Table Talk) in one place.

What's in the web steward training?

What’s going to be covered in the Communications for Chapters training?

The purpose of C4C is to train chapter web stewards and bloggers how to use the new Locals Online system (ver. 3) that runs the SEIU 1021 Web site. If you worked on your legacy local’s Web page (ver. 2), you already have the necessary technical skills. But this upgrade works very differently. It’s completely redesigned behind the scenes — for better use as a campaign tool, not just storing information.

Each 90-minute session covers the basics of creating and editing a chapter page, uploading documents and photos, and adding shop stewards and calendar events to the page for easy reference. With the Webex meeting software, you’ll be able to watch a demonstration in one browser window and follow along in another. And we’ll cover the 1021 Web Use Policies & Procedures, a copy of which each web steward needs to sign and return to the administrator (me).

As it becomes clear how members are using their pages and what the needs are, I may (probably will) devote part of the time to specific topics like how to create a photo gallery or update a campaign blog. I’ll announce that in advance.

Contracts Coming Online

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. Been swamped. To make up for it, here is the first of three entries I meant to post last week -- leading off with one of the questions I get asked the most.

#1

How can we get our contract on the 1021 Web site?

In fact, we’ve begun the process of uploading contracts and linking them to chapter pages; you can see a few of them now. As we collect them, we make them into searchable PDFs that you can download under the Contracts tab on your chapter home page. Right-click the link and save the document; easy. Contracts will also appear on each industry council home page (after we rebuild them). So your contract will be available in two places: with your chapter’s events and worksite information, and together with other collective bargaining agreements from your industry.

Web Steward trainings

SEIU 1021 is a big place, with more than 200 chapters and — who knows? — maybe 10 times that many individual worksites. That makes it really inefficient (not to mention environmentally unfriendly, not to mention wasteful of time and energy) for either you or us to be driving halfway across the state just so a handful of people can get trained.

That's why we're instituting online training for web stewards in 2008, using a Web browser-based meeting application called Webex (www.webex.com). When you join a training/meeting, the system will require you to download a plug-in, but it's automatic and there is absolutely no other software required.

What is a "web steward" and how do I become one?

Good question.

A web steward is the person responsible for posting a chapter's notes, events, newsletters, and other information to its home page. Web stewards are selected by each chapter according to its own decision-making process, not by the Strategic Communications Office. Our role is to train them and then give them access to the parts of the site they need to publish their chapter's information, and then provide ongoing support.

Which parts of the site?

Initially, web stewards get access to what are called the "worksite module" and "events module." That's enough to fill in the body of the page and add your chapter's meetings, events, and shop stewards to the tabs on the righthand side.

Welcome to the new Communications for Chapters blog!

"How do I get my chapter's meetings, contracts, and other information on our Web site?"
That's the most frequent question we get asked in Strategic Communications. This blog is the answer.

On Tuesday, February 12, we'll be launching a new, ongoing series of trainings to help all SEIU 1021 chapters get online. Some have already done so, and a few have begun to use their home pages effectively. Every few days, I'll post more information on how your chapter can do the same.

In this blog I'll answer questions like:
