Single-Payer Update at Convention

" How many of you have a family member or a friend who doesn't have health insurance? How many bargained a new contract last year and have seen their co-pays go up, or their benefits go down, or both?" These were opening lines spoken by Ed Kinchley, Single-Payer Health Care Campaign member, to a packed 1021 Member Convention ballroom. It was an exceptional opportunity for SEIU membership to learn about how this important Single Payer Campaign can address our looming health care needs.

Two years ago, insurance companies helped kill the "public option" in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which took effect in March 2010. But California now has a chance to enact its own "public option" in the form of SB 810 -- the California Universal Healthcare Act -- which would create a statewide single-payer health insurance system.

County Continues to Break Labor Laws, Shuts Down Negotiations

While the SEIU 1021 Bargaining Team in San Joaquin County c ontinues to make every effort for an agreement, the County walked away from negotiations late Monday night. Members gather momentum to take action on Tuesday, Nov. 22 to avoid imposition.

There is a deceptive ballot measure in paid circulation right now that would effectively eliminate the voice of working people in the halls of government.

Its backers? Billionaires and corporations who want to silence the voices of librarians, nurses, bus drivers, social workers, and other people like us. This initiative isn't about "getting special interests out of politics." It's about gaming the system so that CEOs, Wall Street bankers, tobacco companies, oil companies, and drug companies can control our state without any opposition.

LA Times: "Gov. Jerry Brown vetoes farmworkers' bill"

"Gov. Jerry Brown, whose signature more than three decades ago gave agricultural workers the right to unionize by secret ballot, vetoed a bill Tuesday that would have made it easier for farm laborers to organize."

SEIU endorsed Brown for governor, and since then we've admired his pragmatic approach to the state budget and willingness to stand tough and independent with allies as well as opponents. But that doesn't mean we like everything he does.
