Solano County Workers Vote for Second Day of Strike over Unfair Labor Practices After 2,000 March Against County Executives

County-Wide Outreach and Advertising Campaign Alerts Public that County Board and Executives are Breaking Law

(FAIRFIELD)—Nearly 1,800 workers from across Solano County Government today voted to extend their strike to a second day in protest of repeated violations of the law by County executives at the bargaining table.

The decision comes after a frenetic day of strike lines and marches with hundreds of workers, elected officials, and community allies protesting unfair labor practices by County executives and demanding they bargain in good faith. The workers are represented by SEIU Local 1021, and are protesting the County’s failure to engage in a good faith bargaining process. Other sticking issues include intimidation of workers and the County’s refusal to respond to union proposals over safety standards and the county’s legal obligations.

Carmen Curry, a social worker, explained that, “When the Board of Supervisors and County Executives commit unfair labor practices, it hurts nurses, fire fighters, police officers, public service workers and the communities we serve.  We’re taking a stand and reminding the Board and County Executives that they’re not above the law.”

Curry and her colleagues have been also increasing their public outreach to warn the public that the County continues to engage in the illegal practices that have led to this strike. Their outreach includes print, billboard, and digital advertising to reach the public.

Workers from more than 40 facilities across the county, including county libraries, Animal Control, Health and Human Services, the Department of Social Services, Benefits Action Center, and others.

This is the first strike by workers in Solano County in 25 years.
