How We Became SEIU 1021
Background and Timeline
At its 2004 International Convention in San Francisco, SEIU embarked on a bold and ambitious plan to build more power for members and create a union for the realities of the 21st Century.
The Unite to Win Plan was passed by our executive board and we began hearings, listened to member input, and laid the groundwork for realigning ourselves into four public sector locals covering all of California that together would be more powerful than the existing 19 locals scattered statewide. Last fall, when the Unite to Win Plan was put to a vote of California SEIU members, it was approved overwhelmingly.
SEIU 1021 is the public sector local for the northern California region, chartered by SEIU International President Andy Stern in January 2007. President Stern has charged former SEIU 535 Executive Director Damita Davis-Howard with overseeing the realignment process in northern California and with leading SEIU 1021.
