California Primary Election Recommendations
Vote February 5th
The California presidential primary is fast approaching, and in addition to selecting your pick for president, you will be asked to vote on a number of important issues. The February ballot will contain several initiatives that will directly affect the lives of working Californians. We’ve carefully analyzed how these initiatives could impact you and your union, and have made recommendations as follows:
President – Democratic Primary
Barack Obama

Statewide Propositions
No on Proposition 91
The intent of Proposition 91 was to assure that motor vehicle fuel taxes are spent on transportation. This issue has been resolved through the legislative process. The proponents of Prop 91 are encouraging a no vote.
No on Proposition 92
We stand in support of California community colleges and their vital role in educating Californians. However, this proposition pits our public schools against our community colleges for a limited pot of funds when both need more money. It is opposed by teachers and working families.
Yes on Proposition 93
This initiative reduces the maximum number of years a person can serve in the
legislature from 14 to 12 years while allowing legislators to spend all of that time in one house of the legislature. That allows them to gain more experience and become more effective in working on long-term solutions for California.
No on Proposition 94, 95, 96 and 97
These flawed compacts would give unprecedented and unfair special treatment to the four largest Native American tribes for expansion of their casino gambling operations without independent audits of earnings, environmental guarantees or basic rights for casino workers.
Local Ballot Measures
Alameda County
Yes on Measure A
Compromise measure to enact a 30 year parcel tax to fund $300 million of projected $650 million cost to rebuild Children’s Hospital that does not impact County’s bonding ability and reimburses County for administrative costs.
No on Measure B
A different version of Measure A that could negatively impact Alameda County’s bonding ability and require the county to pay administrative costs.
San Francisco City & County
Yes on Proposition A
$185 million bond measure for the construction, reconstruction and improvement of park and recreation facilities.
Yes on Proposition B
Creates a cost neutral deferred retirement option plan for San Francisco police officers.
